LITTLE LEAPERS PRIMARY SCHOOL
Founded by Alice, Little Leaper’s is a primary school which is built on site here at Butterfly. The ten children between the ages of four to seven are taught Standard 2 and the school runs from Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:30am-12pm. The children all live in Nkhata Bay and it is a non profit school teaching disadvantaged children whose families can’t afford school fees. The class is taught in English, although we do bring a translator in if needed.
The children are a huge delight to teach as they are very interactive with the teachers and each other. Always eager to learn, the children have the biggest hearts which they bring into the classroom everyday! In between learning English, Mathematics, Art, Geography and Science, we have a theme each week to liven up teaching. Our themes have ranged from learning about Lake Malawi to finding out about how a farm runs. We encourage the families of the pupils to interact with the school by including parent’s evenings to putting on school plays & performances throughout the year which always goes down with a blast!
It is always a truly rewarding experience to teach the local children at Little Leapers and obviously we would prefer long term volunteers whom are already qualified teachers to take part in this project to benefit the children. The school is taught mainly by volunteers, but we would consider anyone wanting to commit to at least one month. Couples and friends in groups of two are welcome to teach the classes together and although experience in teaching would be preferred, we will greatly consider anyone who can confidently speak English as a first or second language.
The class schedule each day is taught from 8am-9.30am, with a playtime break until 10.15am and then classes until 12pm. During break time we would like to continue with P.E. classes so anyone with a sports interest would be much appreciated to join in during that time at least a few days a week.
VOLUNTEERS CAN CONTRIBUTE IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS:
- TEACHING – If you are a qualified teacher or you can confidently speak English then we would appreciate your help in passing on new ideas and different teaching techniques.
- BRINGING RESOURCES WITH YOU – We really appreciate anyone coming over from your home country’s to bring some resources with you. Whether you have some lesson plans or new games to bring over, the children would benefit greatly with new ideas which will carry on well into the future. Please see our Wish List for any items we are currently in need of.
- PAINTING – Whether you are creative or a builder at heart, painting the walls around the school always keeps it looking fresh and inviting for the children to learn in.
- P.E. TEACHER – As we have stated, we are looking for a P.E. teacher to teach the children new skills during break time. We would appreciate someone who has a passion for sport and team building who can teach the children new skills learning to play together as a team.
