Imagine yourself staying on a cliff looking out to the glorious, crystal clear turquoise waters of Lake Malawi and you will find yourself at Butterfly Space. Spread across a vast land, the locally made chalets, dormitories and campsite are all dotted across the beautiful gardens each with a Lake view offering our guests enough privacy to chill out after hard day of sunbathing on our exclusive private beach. Our beach bar also has a great location tucked away from all of our accommodation as we are respectful of our guests needing a good night’s sleep.
Butterfly Space has been recommended by Lonely Planet’s August 2013 edition of Southern Africa as the Top Pick in the Accommodation section of Nkhata Bay. The researchers have obviously seen something that we at Butterfly are doing which is different to other Lodges which include; a volunteer package if you are interested in staying longer to help the community, an Internet & Information Centre for guests to use, amazingly delicious food from our kitchen, a reggae style relaxed beach bar playing a mix of African and Western tunes, a cinema like room playing all the latest movies off a projector with surround sound speakers most nights before dinner, beautiful chalets to suite doubles, twins or triple’s, one en-suite, two six bed dormitories, camping space amongst the lush green trees to keep you cool once the sun has come up, environmentally friendly compost toilets, spacious showers which include hot water in the evening, the tailoring group are around on wednesdays to mend any of your clothing and of course a safe to put all of your valuables in if required.
Butterfly Space’s main focus is community based projects which attracts longer term volunteers to stay although we really encourage travelers and backpackers alike to come and stay in our homely lodge for a short time whilst they enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Bay.
We are just a ten minute walk up the hill from the small bustling town of Nkhata Bay. There is also a bigger public beach called Chickale which is only a five minute walk around the corner from our Lodge to also explore. There are many activities to do around the area including, snorkeling, trekking, boat trips, cliff jumping and a whole lot more!

Please note: The ATM machines in Nkata bay are notorious for being out of order. They only dispense up to 20,000 Kwacha, so it is best to stock up on cash in Mzuzu or Lilongwe before you leave for Nkata Bay. We recommend Standard Bank. Visa cards are the most widely accepted cards in Malawi and most of Africa, however, Mastercard is accepted at Standard Bank machines in Mzuzu and Lilongwe.
